The Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal is continuing its investigation into a house explosion in Chestertown that claimed the life of a 68-year-old homeowner.

Emergency crews were dispatched around 5:45 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 6900 block of Pentridge Court after multiple 911 calls reported an explosion followed by fire. First responders arrived to find the two-story, approximately 5,000-square-foot residence fully engulfed, with heavy structural damage and signs of an explosion.

Five family members were able to escape safely, but one occupant remained inside. Due to dangerous conditions and structural instability, firefighters conducted exterior operations only. Excavators were later brought in to assist with debris removal.
Investigators worked through the night and located the victim, identified as 68-year-old Charles William Heaps, beneath the debris. A family pet also died in the fire.

Officials say ice conditions limited water supply options, requiring a tanker task force and more than 100,000 gallons of water from the town’s system. A water main break was reported on Flatland Road as crews cleared the scene.

Family members told investigators the home exploded before becoming fully involved in flames. Authorities believe the victim may have been near a wood stove at the time. While the exact cause remains under investigation, officials say propane vapors and a possible electrical ignition source are being examined.

Damage is estimated at $2 million, and the home is considered a total loss. The Maryland State Police are assisting in the ongoing investigation, which is standard in fatal fire cases.
