School Safety and Enrollment Trends in Focus for Queen Anne’s County Public Schools

1/17/2026

Queen Anne’s County Public Schools officials are reviewing results from the 2025 Maryland School Survey, with student safety perceptions and enrollment trends emerging as major points of discussion.

Supervisor of Accountability Jonathan Grow presented the survey results to the Queen Anne’s County Board of Education on January 7. The survey measures safety, environment, engagement, and relationships among students in grades five through 11 and instructional staff.

Student responses showed lower perceptions of safety, with average scores of 4.36 for physical safety and 5.5 for emotional safety. Teacher responses reflected higher safety scores, averaging 8.23 for physical safety and 7.38 for emotional safety. Board Vice President Mathew Drayer described the student safety results as concerning, saying they suggest many students do not feel safe at school.

District leaders said the survey is being used as part of school improvement planning to better understand student experiences and guide future decisions.

Grow also shared enrollment data for the 2025–2026 school year. Total enrollment stands at 7,399 students, down about 40 from last year, while average class sizes remain largely unchanged. Officials noted continued growth in the district’s Hispanic student population and an increase in home instruction enrollment to 509 students.

The Board of Education will hold a work session January 21 and a regular meeting February 4, both open to the public.
