Queen Anne’s County Public Schools Seek Approval to Use Presidents’ Day as Snow Make-Up Day1/17/2026
Queen Anne’s County Public Schools is seeking state approval to use President's Day as a snow make-up day after using two of its three built-in inclement weather days as of January 7.
Interim Superintendent Matthew Kibler said the option is allowed under state law and has been used in past years. Without additional make-up days, the school calendar would extend further into June to meet the required 180 instructional days. Board members acknowledged the decision may impact families who already made holiday plans but agreed preserving summer vacation days and preparing for continued winter weather were priorities. A formal request will be sent to the Maryland State Board of Education, which is scheduled to consider it at a January 27 meeting. A previous request to use Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a make-up day was denied, and state officials have directed districts not to use that holiday for weather make-up days in future calendars. Queen Anne’s County schools will remain closed on Monday, January 19. District officials also noted that limited connectivity in some areas and the lack of school-issued devices for all students prevent the district from fully meeting state requirements for virtual instruction.
