Queen Anne’s County High Student Named to “18 Under 18” Leadership Program

​A Queen Anne’s County High School senior is being recognized for her leadership and community impact across the Eastern Shore.

Averie Mortimer has been selected to the 2026 Junior Achievement of the Eastern Shore “18 Under 18” cohort, a program that honors outstanding students for achievements in leadership, service, and academics.

Mortimer is the founder of Project Can Do, a student-led nonprofit that supports veterans in hospice care. The organization has raised more than $7,000, expanded to five schools, and delivered over 400 handmade blankets with personalized messages to veterans.

At Queen Anne’s County High School, Mortimer serves as president of both the Interact Club and the Social Studies National Honor Society. She is also a member of the Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council, where she helps represent student voices at the district level.

In addition to her leadership roles, Mortimer is active in music and the arts. She is the drum major for the school’s marching band and performs on multiple instruments, including flute and piccolo. She has also been selected for the All-Shore Honors Band and regularly performs for residents in local nursing homes.

Academically, she maintains a rigorous schedule of Advanced Placement and honors courses while also volunteering with historical programs, including the Gettysburg reenactment and museum efforts.

Mortimer will be recognized at the Junior Achievement “18 Under 18” Awards Ceremony on May 18 at 5 p.m. at the Junior Achievement Center in Salisbury, alongside other student leaders from across the region.
