Queen Anne’s County Expands Homeownership Assistance Program

3/6/2026

The Queen Anne’s County Commissioners have approved additional funding to expand a program that helps residents purchase homes in the county.

The recent budget amendment adds $200,000 to the county’s Moderately Priced Dwelling Unit (MPDU) Loan Program, allowing more first-time homebuyers to receive assistance during Fiscal Year 2026. Officials say the increase will be funded through the existing Moderately Priced Housing Loan Fund and will not require additional county tax dollars.

The program provides interest-free loans of about $50,000 to eligible buyers with moderate incomes, typically those earning at or below 80 percent of the area median income. The loans can be used for down payments or other home purchase costs.

County officials say the program operates as a revolving loan fund, meaning loans are repaid when the home is sold and the funds are then used to assist future homebuyers.

Funding comes from development fees collected when builders choose to pay into the county’s Moderately Priced Housing Fund instead of constructing affordable units within certain housing projects.

County leaders say the expansion will help more residents transition from renting to homeownership while supporting the county’s broader housing initiatives, including assistance programs for essential workers such as teachers, first responders and volunteer firefighters.
