Mid-Shore Residents Urged to Take Precautions as Bitter Cold Moves In

Residents across the Mid-Shore are being urged to prepare for bitterly cold conditions expected to impact the region over the coming days.

Forecasts call for high temperatures only in the mid to upper 20s Tuesday (1/20/26), with overnight lows falling in to the teens. Local officials say the prolonged cold could pose risks, especially for the elderly, and households struggling with heating costs.

The Maryland Department of Health is reminding residents to take simple but important steps to stay safe during extreme cold weather.
Health officials recommend regularly checking on older family members, friends, and neighbors, particularly those who live alone, as they are more susceptible to cold-related illnesses. Residents are also encouraged to make sure their homes are properly heated, with thermostats set no lower than 55 degrees to help prevent both health risks and frozen pipes. Also, do not leave pets outside for extended periods of time.

Another recommendation includes reducing clutter around vents and radiators to allow warm air to circulate more effectively throughout the home.

Officials stress that checking in on others during periods of extreme cold can make a significant difference. Even a quick phone call or visit could help identify a dangerous situation before it becomes an emergency.

As the cold settles in, residents are encouraged to dress in layers, limit time outdoors when possible, and monitor local forecasts for updates.
