Maryland State Police Urge Safe Disposal of Medications on Drug Take Back Day

4/20/2026

Maryland State Police are encouraging residents to safely dispose of unused or expired prescription medications during National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25.

Residents can drop off medications from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at any Maryland State Police barrack, no questions asked. Officials say the effort provides a safe and anonymous way to prevent drug misuse and keep medications out of the wrong hands.

State Police barracks also offer secure drop boxes that are available year-round.

On the Mid-Shore, the Centreville Barrack collected more than 580 pounds of medications during the last take-back event in October 2025.

Statewide, more than 11,000 pounds of prescription drugs were collected during that event, with nearly 36,000 pounds removed since the program began in 2014.

The initiative is part of a nationwide effort led by the Drug Enforcement Administration in partnership with local and state law enforcement agencies.

Residents can find the nearest drop-off location by visiting the Maryland State Police website.
