Maryland Reports Strong Year for Oyster Population Growth

4/1/2026

State officials say 2025 was a historic year for oyster reproduction in Maryland waters, bringing promising news for both the Chesapeake Bay and the Eastern Shore’s seafood industry.

According to the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the number of young oysters was nearly six times higher than the long-term average and the second highest recorded in more than four decades of surveys.

Officials say the growth is being seen across the Bay, including areas important to Mid-Shore watermen such as the Choptank and Chester rivers.

Governor Wes Moore called the results a major milestone, highlighting oysters as a key part of both the Bay’s health and the state’s economy.

Experts say the increase in oysters will help improve water quality while also supporting local watermen and the region’s seafood industry. Survey results also show low levels of disease and mortality, further boosting confidence in the Bay’s recovery.
