Maryland Launches Hiring Campaign for Teacher Coaching Program

4/20/2026

Maryland education officials are launching a statewide hiring effort to strengthen classroom instruction with the addition of dozens of teacher coaches.

State Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carey Wright announced the initiative Monday, which will add more than 60 coaching positions across public schools. The effort follows approval of more than $14 million in state funding to support instructional coaching programs.

The Maryland State Department of Education plans to hire school-based and regional coaches focused on literacy and math. These educators will work directly with teachers, providing ongoing support, feedback, and training aimed at improving student outcomes.

Officials say coaches will be assigned to schools based on factors such as student performance, the number of conditionally licensed teachers, and the needs of special education and multilingual learners.

The program, created by the Maryland General Assembly in 2025, is designed to boost both student achievement and teacher retention.
State leaders say the coaching model is based on proven strategies that emphasize continuous improvement and hands-on support in the classroom.

Job openings for the new positions are now available through the Maryland State Department of Education.
