Sheriff’s Office Warns of Phone Scam Targeting Queen Anne’s County Residents

1/13/2026

The Queen Anne’s County Office of the Sheriff is warning residents about an active phone scam targeting people across the county.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, callers are falsely identifying themselves as a sheriff’s deputy, sometimes using the name “Sgt. Calloway,” and claiming the recipient has an outstanding arrest warrant. The scammers tell victims the warrant can be resolved by making an immediate payment.

Authorities say the scammers may claim the victim missed jury duty, threaten immediate arrest if payment is not made, or even send a photo of a fake warrant containing the victim’s name in an effort to appear legitimate.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents that law enforcement will never call to demand payment for a warrant. Officials say if a legitimate warrant exists, officers will make contact in person. Law enforcement will also never request payment using gift cards, money transfers, or cryptocurrency. Scammers rely on fear and urgency to pressure victims into sending money quickly.

Anyone who receives one of these calls or text messages is urged to hang up immediately and not engage. Residents who believe they may have provided money or personal information are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Office as soon as possible.
