Explosive Device Damages Mailbox in Galena

1/12/2026

Authorities are investigating after an explosive device was intentionally detonated inside a residential mailbox on Jan 4 in Kent County.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office, the incident was reported just after 9:30 p.m. on January 4 in the 13700 block of Gregg Neck Road near Galena. Investigators believe the device was placed inside a mailbox and deliberately detonated, causing damage to both the mailbox and its supporting post.

The homeowner discovered the damage and alerted authorities. While the explosion caused an estimated $80 in property damage, no injuries or resident displacements have been reported.

Deputies from the Kent County Sheriff’s Office and fire marshal’s investigators are working to identify potential suspects. The cause has been classified as incendiary, meaning the device appears to have been set intentionally.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the Upper Eastern Regional Office of the Maryland State Fire Marshal at 410-819-3500.
