A historic one-room Black church in Sudlersville is moving closer to reopening months after a truck crashed into the building in September 2025, causing significant damage.
Jeffers Chapel recently received rebuilding permit approval from the fire marshal, clearing a major hurdle in what church leaders describe as a long and frustrating process. Trustee Lisa Kennedy said limited insurance coverage and delays involving county planning, zoning, and fire officials slowed progress. A previous permit request had been denied before ultimately being approved. Despite the setbacks, Kennedy said community support has remained strong throughout the ordeal. Jeffers Chapel, a privately owned historic structure, is typically open just once a year for its annual Homecoming service in October. The church has stood at its current location since the late 1800s, when members of Kennedy’s family helped build it. Although regular services ended in the late 1970s, Kennedy said her grandmother made it a priority to continue the annual gathering — a tradition that has now continued for more than a century. Church leaders say preserving the chapel is about honoring faith, family history, and generations of local heritage.
