Former Kent Center Site May Become Homeless Shelter in Chestertown

4/22/2026

A new proposal could bring a 24/7 homeless shelter to the former Kent Center facility in Chestertown.

According to Ward 4 Councilman Stephen Lozar, the organization — which closed earlier this year following state violations and the loss of its license — is planning to reopen under a new name, Mollitiam, as a 60-bed homeless shelter.

Kent Center’s closure earlier this year followed action by the Maryland Department of Health, which suspended its license and shut down residential and support programs. The move displaced dozens of residents and led to significant staff layoffs.

Lozar said he recently toured the facility at 215 Scheel Road and was told the organization is preparing the space with beds and working toward a possible opening later this year. Some properties previously operated by Kent Center have already been repurposed, while others could be used as part of the shelter.

The proposed shelter would offer wraparound services, including transportation, access to medical care, and connections to local resources. Organizers are also seeking community support, including donations of hygiene items and financial assistance.

Lozar emphasized the project is still in its early stages and said no formal action has been taken by the mayor and town council. He added that he is not advocating for or against the proposal but was sharing information following his visit.

Town officials say zoning approvals may be required before the project can move forward, as the property is not currently designated for shelter use.

Further details are expected as plans develop.
