A structure fire caused extensive damage to a garage and nearby home in Caroline County Sunday evening, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal.

Firefighters were dispatched around 5:44 p.m. to a property along Shore Highway in Denton after a passerby spotted the fire and alerted the occupants.

Officials say the fire started on the exterior of a detached garage before spreading to the 24 by 32 foot structure and eventually extending to a nearby home on the property.

Crews from the Denton Volunteer Fire Company responded with about 45 firefighters and brought the blaze under control in approximately one hour.

No injuries were reported, but a family of six was displaced as a result of the fire and is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Damage to the structures and contents is estimated at around $300,000. Investigators say smoke alarms were present and activated.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
